World Kindness Day: 5 Ways To Be A Kind Student

Today (13 November 2018) is World Kindness Day, so in the spirit of this I have come up with 5 ways that students can show kindness.

Kindness is so inherently important to our everyday lives. A kind word or action can turn someone's day around. Furthermore, studies have shown that kindness can bring all sorts of benefits, not just for us but all people involved! Showing kindness to others has been scientifically proven to make us feel more positive, both about ourselves and life in general, as an example. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and be kind.

Here are 5 ideas for how to show kindness as a student, but there are lots more things you could do, so don’t feel at all limited by these suggestions! Rather, use them as a starting point for practicing kindness.

  1. Knock on a flatmate’s door, ‘just to see how they are’. I do this often as it's a nice way to stay social with your flatmates, and take your focus off yourself and your work (at least for a little bit!) Perhaps they’re having a rough time, and the simple act of chatting to you for five minutes might just make their day that little bit better. You could also offer to make them a cup of tea, or their preferred hot beverage- that always helps!

  2. Wash up not just your things but everything that’s there… This could end up being quite a lot, especially if you’re in a particularly messy flat or house. But, it will definitely be appreciated by your flatmates!

  3. Give up time to volunteer- The joy of volunteering is that you can give up as much or as little time as you like. You may choose to volunteer regularly by helping out with a society or club, or perhaps with a local charity. You could sign up to one of the many schemes over Christmas to help out less privileged people, such as the homeless. Even if you can’t give much time don’t worry- whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated.  For more information on how to volunteer for the SU, click here.

  4. Don’t always automatically sit with your friends in lectures. Once we get to know people it can be so easy to just sit with the same people in every lecture. Don't. Go sit next to someone who’s on their own, introduce yourself and chat with them. You never know, you could make a new friend, and you will have helped to put another person at ease.

  5. Text one of your friends from home, whether they are at uni or not, and ask how their day is going. They will really appreciate you thinking of them, and taking the time to text to see how they are. Perhaps see if you can arrange to chat on the phone or FaceTime at some point, as seeing people face-to-face beats texting any day.

So those are my ideas for how to show kindness as a student, but there are so many more ways!

Let’s all strive to be kind!
