The following blog post was written by one of our Residence Mentors, Alice.

There is no shortage of amazing vegan and vegetarian food places in Sheffield. Whilst most restaurants in and around the city do offer meat and dairy free options this is a list of my favourite finds so far:

1. Make No Bones, Chesterfield Road

As it says on their Facebook page, Make No Bones “serves food for people who love animals and love to eat.” Too often vegan and vegetarian options are lazy, but this place does not disappoint. I would highly recommend trying their avocado wings and pesto fries.

2. The Red Deer Pub, Pitt Street

This is one of my favourite pubs in Sheffield. Its super cosy inside and has a variety of vegan options on the food menu. It also offers certified vegan pale ale! They often have specials written on the chalk board towards the back of the pub, so look out for them. Some of my favourite dishes have included battered tofu and chips, butternut squash and sweet potato burgers and the most incredible BBQ cauliflower wings!

3. Ink and Water, Fitzwilliam Street

This is a hidden gem located amongst the West One area of restaurants and bars by Vodka Revolution. You must try their vegan chocolate tiffins, and there are freshly baked vegan and gluten free cake and brownie options available to eat in or takeaway. Also, on Saturdays it stays open late and they make all kinds of exciting espresso and coffee cocktails!

4. Blue Moon Café, St James Row

This is one of the go-to vegan/vegetarian haunts in Sheffield. It is very casual inside, with lots of nice artwork hanging on the walls, and operates like a canteen. It offers a selection of foods that are freshly made and change all the time, such as curries, goulashes and a variety of delicious salads. They also do great coffee and a selection of great vegan sweet treats. Its also possible to get takeout from here, so you can easily pop in to get yourself some lunch and take it back to the IC with you.

5. The Cabin, Fitzwilliam Gate (Pancakes)

This is a proper American pancake house located down by the moor. As well as doing great coffee it offers a variety of delicious dairy and gluten free pancake and waffle options, and it does takeaway!

6. Falafel King, Glossop Road

Eating at Falafel King is an absolute right of passage for any University of Sheffield student. It’s a super easy and delicious lunch option, offering huge wraps packed full of falafel and salad goodness. Its also right next the SU, so easy to pop in and out of if you’re in a rush.

7. Tamper, Arundel Street

Tamper is an absolute must visit for coffee and brunch lovers. It also has a selection of great vegan lunch options, which is often hard to come by! I’d highly recommend trying the Rejuvenator or the chilli ginger marinated tofu and roasted broccoli salad – they’re both delicious. It’s also a great place to go when it’s sunny, because it has a cute little garden with table benches to sit at.

8. Urban Choola, Ecclesall Road

If you like Indian food this is a great find. After spending a month travelling India and eating incredible curries 24/7 I’ve become somewhat of a curry snob and this place offers a great selection of Indian street food. My personal favourite is their authentic Thalis, which allow you to get your fill of a variety of dishes, including rice and naan without spending a fortune.

9. Italia Uno, Ecclesall Road

This family owned Italian has a whole dedicated vegan menu! This includes pasta, risotto and pizza all made using vegan cheese options so you don’t have to go without your classic Italian favourites. Perhaps their biggest selling point in my eyes is that they make vegan arancini, which is irresistibly delicious. To top this off, it also does takeaway and delivery!

10. Somewhere Else Coffee, Ecclesall Road

This adorable independently owned coffee shop has a selection of vegan cakes and sweet treats that change all the time. See the counter for their daily selections and treat yourself to some cruelty-free deliciousness. And if this isn’t tempting enough the café allows dogs too, and who doesn’t want to eat their cake surrounded by dogs?

Hope you enjoy visiting some of these wonderful place!

Bon appetite!
