LGBT+ History Month

Did you know that LGBT+ History Month is a month-long annual focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements.

Here is an overview of all the University’s LGBT+ Events throughout the month of February - all are welcome:

Lunchtime Seminar hosted by the LGBT+ Staff Network - Drew Dalton & Jo-Henderson Merrygold, Wednesday 14 February, 12.45pm - 2.00pm, ICOSS Conference Room

Drew is a revert to Islam and a Sociologist at the University of Sunderland. His research and work focuses on the lives of LGBTQI+ people, global health, global homophobia and people living with HIV.

Jo Henderson-Merrygold is a Methodist Local Preacher and former church development worker and university chaplain. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Sheffield Institute for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies (SIIBS), and she co-directs Hidden Perspectives: Bringing the Bible out of the Closet.

The session will conclude with a Q&A. Coffee and cake will be provided.  All welcome.

Lunchtime Seminar hosted by the LGBT+ Staff Network in partnership with the School of Law - Chris Ashford & Stefanie Pletz, Tuesday 20 February, 12.30pm - 1.30pm, ICOSS Conference Room

Chris is a Professor of Law and Society at Northumbria University, and identifies as a​ cis gay man. He is active within the Gender, Sexuality & Law and Law & Society groups and is a member of the Lesbian and Gay Lawyers Association (LAGLA) North East Advisory Board.

Stefanie is a Lecturer in Law from the University of Sheffield's School of Law, and the Programme Director of the LLB Law with German Law. Her research and teaching focuses on comparative law, transnational financial law and critical legal theory.

The session will conclude with a Q&A. Coffee and cake will be provided. All welcome.

Test your knowledge of LGBT+ History, and the potential to win a £50 prize!  All welcome, no need to book tickets, just come along.

LGBT+ History Exhibition, Monday 19 February, 12pm - 7pm, Foundry (Students' Union)

This exhibition will focus on historical icons, UK queer activism, the history of words, queer spaces & drag, and queer history across the world.  All welcome, no need to book tickets, just come along.

Film Screening: "Call me by your name", Sunday 25 February, 7pm start, SU Auditorium

The Film Unit are screening the film "Call me by your name", a 2017 film directed by Luca Guadagnino and based on the novel of the same name. All welcome, tickets are £3 and available from the SU box office or online here.
