Each week we introduce a different instructor who teaches for Residence Life. This week it is Beth, our Zumba ambassador and teacher! Her sessions are notoriously oversubscribed thanks to her high energy and passion for this wonderful dance class.
What do you teach at Residence Life and elsewhere?
I teach Zumba for Residence Life, Sport Sheffield, Zumba Society at UoS, Virgin and community classes within Nether Edge.
What is your favourite class to teach and why?
I love teaching Zumba. It brings people so much joy, and I think people surprise themselves with what they can actually do. People love the music; the rhythm and it really makes them feel alive. As a teacher I find this incredibly inspiring.
How long have you been an instructor/teacher?
What made you want to become an instructor?
I attended Zumba classes, and never got interested in any other form of exercise, as I found it lifeless and repetitive. Zumba throws all that out the window and brings you exercise in disguise. You don’t even realise you are working out, but the sweat on your back and the flood of endorphins tells you! Having taught other things in the past and loved dancing, this seemed like the perfect fit for me, and 8 years later, I’ve never looked back. It is the most satisfying and wonderful feeling to teach in my classes.
Do you still find time/energy to do other types of sport and exercise?
I do a basic HIIT routine 3 times a week at home on my own. I also do a bit of yoga occasionally. But I love going out dancing in the evening, Salsa and Kizomba mainly.
What does exercise and healthy lifestyle mean to you?
I love the feeling of looking after my body whilst doing something I am enjoying. It also gives me time to focus on me rather than my three kids.
One interesting fact about you
Prior to teaching Zumba I used to teach Hypnobirthing, antenatal instruction using hypnosis and a greater knowledge of your body to have a safer, calmer and easier birthing experience.
You can attend Beth's class every Monday 7:45-8:30 pm at The Edge.
